Q3 2007 :Envy with Green(tech) - Part 2:
Congratulations to Sierra Design
Automation on its acquisition by
Mentor Graphics. Mentor Graphics
has strengthened its tool line up by
acquiring RTL-to-GDSII vendor Sierra
Design Automation for $90 million.
The acquisition makes Mentor a direct
competitor with Cadence, Synopsys,
and Magma in traditionally the most
lucrative segment of EDA, digital IC
implementation tools. The acquisition
will bring Sierra’s formidable Pinnacal
suite to Mentor, which includes physical
synthsesis, floorplanning, and place
and route technology to complement
Mentor’s flagship Calibre DRC/LVS
tools. As a 60 plus-person start-up,
Sierra had already broken into large
accounts including AMD, ATI,
Microelectronics, and LiteScape,
Genband, and Xambala for their respective
financings. LiteScape raised more
than $11 million in a Series B Round.
Investors included Blumberg, Softbank,
Vedanta, and TeleSoft. Genband raised
over $12 million in an extension of its
Series C Round. Contributing to the
round were Granite Global, HLM,
Invesco, Investcorp, Intel, Oak, Sevin
Rosen, Siemens, Trellis, Venrock, and
TeleSoft. Xambala raised more than $4
million in a first closing of its Series C
Round. Egora, Jafco, Mohr Davidow
Ventures, and TeleSoft participated in
the round.
